Photography, Thoughts, Golden Hour, Blue HourTo say I haven't written in awhile is an understatement. I decided it was time to do a blog again and talk about photography, either my photos, or just photography in general. Photography in some ways is very simple, and in other ways, very complex. You can point and shoot and get an image. That can be photography, and I suppose I do that alot now on my phone. I prefer my Nikon but my phone is always with me and I have a decent camera on it (Samsung 23). So now I have photos on my phone, on my camera memory cards, and on my external hard drive and in Lightroom libraries. Luckily it can all be consolidated fairly easily in one place. This time of year is the best time to be outside in Michigan. Finally we get sunshine and late nights where the sun doesn't set until 9 or even 10 pm at night. The golden hour lasts a very long time in May-Aug timeframe in Michigan. People ask me if I am a morning person or a night person. Neither... I am at my best at about 5 pm to 7 pm at night. And that is often the golden hour. Summer time I'll just have to extend my favorite time a little longer. When I was very young, we lived in a house in Michigan that faced west. I remember playing in the front yard as the sun was going down. Those were the days that you played outside until the street lights came on. And our block had LOTS of kids, all playing outside. It was a really fun time. Later we moved to Florida. Florida has its own beautiful things. But one thing it doesn't have is a long golden hour. When the sun sets there, even in the summertime, it sets within about a half hour. Closer to the equator, the says don't stretch as long. You might've noticed I haven't said much about the Blue Hour. That is the hour when the sun comes up. I am not, and never have been, a morning person. I heard someone, somewhere, say that if you are not an early riser you can't be a photographer. I don't agree... you just get "different" photos than someone who does. Stay tuned. More photography related blogs and thoughts about photography coming in the near future. Holiday Season - 2023This year the holiday season has snuck up on me. Even though we got back from Alaska at the end of September, I just finished going through my photos from the trip. I'm happy with what I took, though of course, would've liked to take more. I have had some time to think about what to get my family and friends, and luckily most have given me hints or outright lists to choose from. For some reason I want to get my shopping over with and get everything wrapped and sent out within the next week. I just don't want to be shopping or figuring out what to get anyone at the last minute, and unfortunately I am not a good Christmas or Chanukah shopper until at least October. I am not sure how I am going to post all the photos that I love, but I will work on it. :-) This particular one is an island that we passed on one of the first days that we sailed out of Vancouver. It was an island, and as we got closer we could see more and more homes on it. At first we thought it was deserted, but as we got closer to it, and further along its coast, we saw more and more homes. My husband thought it would be a great place to live, even after he saw the other homes on the island. We named the island "Mike's Island." Unfortunately I do not know the real name of it, but I think it was a beautiful place, and would be a beautiful place to live. Alaska - Whale WatchingMy husband and I went to Alaska last September. We had a really good time. We went whale watching while we were there and there was a baby humpback whale that kept breaching. I'd never seen a whale breach before! It was so much fun to see. I hope you enjoy it!
Young Eagle in AlaskaI was going through my photos and took a second look at this photo. The original is farther away, but when I zoomed in I realized it was a nice picture of a young eagle (under 5 years old). I love how they perch on top of things, and in this case the eagle is perched on top of a fallen tree stump/branch along the river that we were rafting down. So cool to see eagles in person, close up and in a place where I was able to take pictures of them.
